Juniper Berry Oil - Cert. Organic
The juniper berry originated in the Mediterranean (Spain, Italy, France), Hungary and Canada. It is an evergreen shrub or tree which can grow up to 5 or 6m high. It has blue to green stiff needles with small flowers and berries, green to begin with, turning black in their second to third year. A Juniper berry is the female seed cone produced by the various species of Junipers. It is not a true berry but a cone which, given its fleshy and merged scales, appears as a berry.
The essential oil, a pale yellow, is extracted by steam distillation from the berries. It has traditionally been valued as for antiseptic and astringent applications as well as for its spice quality. Gin is a spirit whose predominant flavor is derived from juniper berries. In fact the name gin comes from the French pronunciation of Juniper.
